Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such medications need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
